Growing up in the foothills of the Colorado Rocky Mountains greatly influenced my love of the Earth. It nourished me with its colours, shapes and structure. Vegetation is sparse in the foothills, so the artist is left with earth’s timeline written in the upheaval of the layers of earth, rock and colour. The ever present First Nations use of the earth in their culture is also strong in my memory.
These two influences led me to clay. To use the earth to make something that is part of our utilitarian life or to make an object of art is like growing a vegetable garden or a flower garden… I am a gardener of the Earth’s clay….
